geography
The municipality of Réchicourt-le-Château is located in the southeast corner of the Moselle department. To the northwest is the Étang de Réchicourt ( Rixinger Weiher ). The difference in level of 16 meters between this and the higher Étang de Gondrexange is overcome by a single lock . To the northeast on the border with the neighboring municipality of Gondrexange lies the Col des Français ( French pass ).
history
The place was first mentioned in 770 as Richisi curtis , then Ruchesingen in 1179. The village was German until 1661, then came to France, became German again in 1871 and French again in 1919. In the period from 1939 to 1945 it was again under the German administration and then again under the French administration. It is surrounded by extensive forest areas.
The site includes the Réchicourt Castle, a building from the 15th century, which received its current appearance in the Renaissance style in the 16th century and was a seat of the Counts of Leiningen . Count Ludwig Eberhard von Leiningen-Westerburg-Rixingen sold it in 1669 to the Danish liege Count Friedrich von Ahlefeldt (1623–1686). The small but imperial direct rule was sold in 1703 by his only son, second marriage and successor to his stepbrother Frederik (1662–1708) zu Rixingen and Mörsberg, Carl von Ahlefeldt (1670–1722) to his brother-in-law, Count Friedrich Ludwig von Nassau zu Ottweiler . According to Zedler, it was again owned by the Leiningen-Westerburg-Rixingen around 1740/1742. From 1751 to 1789 it belonged to the Dukes of Fronsac-Richelieu. Today the castle has fallen into ruins.
Until 2015, Réchicourt-le-Château was the eponymous capital of the canton of Réchicourt-le-Château, which was dissolved that year .

lock
The lock Écluse de Réchicourt-le-Château built between 1960 and 1965 on the Canal de la Marne au Rhin replaces a staircase with six locks. Their height of fall is 15.45 to 16.10 meters, depending on the water level of the canal. This makes it the highest French lock in a Freycinet canal.
The volume of the lock chamber is 3768 m³. It is 40 meters long and 6 meters wide, the minimum water depth is 2.6 meters. The upper gate has two wings, a lifting gate was installed down the channel, which is pulled up to open. In contrast to six hours through the lock staircase, the passage of a ship only takes around 30 minutes.
