Niederstinzel is a French commune with 257 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

Niederstinzel is located north of Fénétrange on the left bank of the Saar . In the north, Niederstinzel borders the Bas-Rhin department . The Mosterwald in the west of the district is part of the Pays des Étangs pond area within the Lorraine Regional Nature Park . The department road D 43 runs through the municipality from Sarre-Union to Sarrebourg .

history

Niederstinzel was built around Geroldseck Castle. In the 19th century it was one of two vineyards in the Sarrebourg arrondissement with a cultivation area of ​​30 hectares. Phylloxera put an end to viticulture.

Culture and sights

  • Enclosing walls of the Geroldseck ruin. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times and was given its current name after the noble Johann von Geroldseck († 1359). It was finally razed by François de Créquy in 1677.
  • 17th century Catholic church, extensively restored in 1934. Inside, sculptures and paintings by Johann Martersteck from around 1730. Behind the church there is an ossuary from the early 18th century.
  • From 1756 some boundary stones on the former border between the Duchy of Lorraine and Nassau-Saarbrücken have been preserved. There are typical Lorraine crosses at both entrances, one of which is dated 1748.
