Moyenvic is a French commune with 364 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins .

geography

The municipality of Moyenvic is located on the Seille , a tributary of the Moselle , seven kilometers southeast of Château-Salins . The municipal area of ​​14.48 km² borders the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the south .

history

The place was first mentioned in 836 as Medianus Vicus , the name derives from its central position between the historical centers Vic-sur-Seille and Marsal in Saulnois . Salt has been mined in Moyenvic since pre-Roman times, until the last salt works was closed in 1831 due to unprofitability.

Since 1661 the place belongs to France. From 1871 to 1918 the place belonged again to the German Empire , from 1915-18 it bore the Germanized name Medewich .

During the Second World War , the village population was expelled by the Germans except for three families , the abandoned village was named Mettwich from 1940-44 . In September 1944, Moyenvic was liberated by the Americans and almost completely destroyed in the fighting.
