Buhl-Lorraine (German Bühl , 1940–44 Bühl am Kanal ) is a French commune with 1214 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).
geography
The municipality of Buhl-Lorraine is located on the Rhine-Marne Canal , immediately southeast of Sarrebourg .
The hamlets of Bettling, Jungforst, Mouckenhof ( Mückenhof ) and Neuhof belong to Buhl-Lorraine .
history
The place was first mentioned as Bule in the 9th century and was depopulated and abandoned during the Thirty Years War . In 1661 the area came to France and the place was rebuilt and repopulated. The village was German until 1661, then became part of France, became German again in 1871 and then French again in 1919. In the period from 1939 to 1945 it was again under German administration and then again under French administration.
At the beginning of the First World War , the Battle of Saarburg took place near Buhl , and in 1919 a large French war memorial was erected here. The so-called Cross of Saarburg (Croix de Buhl in French), where the cross was shot away on August 20, 1914, but the figure of the Savior remained upright and undamaged, still stands on the battlefield today . The monument gained great fame as a postcard and flag motif.
On March 10, 1920, the city council decided to rename Buhl in Buhl-Lorraine.
