Ulrich Han (or Haan , also Udalricus Gallus ; * probably around 1425; † not before 1478) was one of the earliest German incunabulum printers with an office abroad. He is considered to be the printer of the first woodcut book in Italy.

life and work

Little is known about Ulrich Hans's life. He probably came from Ingolstadt and is said to have lived in Vienna after 1450, where, however, there is no record of him as a printer. From 1466 to 1475 he printed in Rome under the name Han or Udalricus Gallus, partly together with Simone de Nicolò Cardella . In 1476 Lupus Gallus, Frater Udalrici Galli de Vienna is named as successor to Hans.

Han dated the completion of the print of Cardinal Juan de Torquemada's meditation on December 31, 1467; he decorated this work with woodcuts. This print is considered to be the oldest woodblock print in Italy. The Commentarii on the Psalms, printed by Han, also came from Torquemada . Han also printed the ancient writings, including the Ciceros and Plutarchs , probably at the instigation of the scholars of Rome, such as Anton Campanus' ; he was also credited with the earliest casting of Greek types . On November 20, 1475 appeared with his imprint Margarita poetica of Albrecht von Eyb . In a missal from 1476, Han also printed the notes for the first time.
