Ilia Smirin ( Russian Илья Смирин , Hebrew איליה סמירין; * January 21, 1968 in Vitebsk , Belarusian SSR ) is a Belarusian-Israeli grandmaster in chess .
Life
Smirin emigrated to Israel in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and won the Israeli individual championship in 1992 and 2002 . His international tournament successes include victory in Dos Hermanas together with Alexei Drejew in 2001 , the following year he won the Biel Grandmaster Tournament and shared first place at the World Open in Philadelphia in 2002 and 2003. In 2002 Smirin belonged to the victorious world selection in the competition Russia against the rest of the world . Smirin won the Rilton Cup in Stockholm at the turn of the year 1988/1989 . Smirin qualified twice for the World Chess Cup . In 2005 he reached the third round with victories against Walter Arencibia and Wang Yue , in which he failed to Gata Kamsky , in 2009 he defeated Jaan Ehlvest in the first round and lost to Vladimir Malachov in the second round .
In February 2015 he is in third place in the Israeli ranking. In January 2002, Smirin was ranked among the top 15 players in the world with its highest rating to date of 2702.
National team
With the Israeli national team, Smirin took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1992 , 1994 , 1996 , 1998 , 2000 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2010 and 2014 . The best result here was third place with the team in 2010. He also represented Israel at the World Team Championships in 2005, 2010 and 2011 and the European Team Championships in 1992, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2011 . At the team European championships in 2003 and 2005, he reached second place with Israel.

In Israel Smirin played for Elitzur Petach Tikwa and Ashdod , and he took part in the European Club Cup with both clubs . He won the Russian team championship in 2003 with Ladja Kazan-1000 , with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup in the same year. He won the British Four Nations Chess League in 2006 with Wood Green , in France he played for L'Echiquier Chalonnais from 2008 to 2010 and was French team champion in 2010 . In the Czech Extraliga he played for ŠK Mahrla Prague from 2003 to 2005 and for GASCO Pardubice in the 2017/18 season , and Smirin was also active for the Russian club Vektor Novosibirsk , the Bosnian club ŠK Bosna Sarajevo and the Moldovan club Perfect .
