Walter Arencibia Rodríguez (born July 21, 1967 in Holguín ) is a Cuban chess master .

Walter Arencibia learned chess when he was eight and made rapid progress. He won the Cuban Youth Championship in 1985 and was World Youth Champion in Gausdal in 1986 . He was Cuban national champion in the same year. In the course of 1990 Arencibia improved his Elo rating by 130 points to 2550: He again won the Cuban championship that year, the Capablanca Memorial in Havana and qualified through the zone tournament for the interzonal tournament in Manila . For these achievements, FIDE awarded him the title of Grand Master . Arencibia also took part in the 1993 interzonal tournament in Biel . From 1986 in Dubai to 2006 in Turin , he represented Cuba at nine Chess Olympiads . In addition, Arencibia took part in the team world championships in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2005, where he achieved the third-best result of the reserve players in Be'er Scheva in 2005 and won the Pan-American team championships with the Cuban team in 1987 in Junín , 1991 in Guarapuava , 1995 in Cascavel , 2000 in Mérida (Venezuela) and 2003 in Rio de Janeiro .

In the Spanish team championship he played for CE Terrassa in 1997 and 1998 .

The highest he reached Elo rating was 2573 in January of 2008.
