Guillermo García González (born December 9, 1953 in Santa Clara (Cuba) , † October 26, 1990 near Havana ) was a Cuban chess master .
Life
García learned the rules of chess when he was six. As a teenager he became one of the leading players in Cuba. In 1973 he won the Cuban Youth Championship with 11 points from 11 games.
In 1974 he became International Master and 1976 Grand Master .
After he finished thirteenth at the Rio de Janeiro interzonal tournament in 1979 in Rio de Janeiro , he barely missed qualifying for the Candidates Tournament in 1982 at the interzonal tournament in Moscow .
Until his death in a car accident, he was considered one of the leading Cuban chess players.
His Elo rating at this point was 2495, making him number four in Cuba.
National team
García took part with the Cuban national team from 1974 to 1988 in all seven Chess Olympiads in which Cuba played (the 1976 Chess Olympiad was boycotted by Cuba). He also played in the team's World Cup in 1989 in Lucerne and in the Pan-American Team Championship 1987 in Junín . He won this with the Cuban team and at the same time achieved the best individual result on the third board.
