The women's interzonal tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 1979 and the men's were chess tournaments .

From September 22 to October 21, 1979, two interzonal tournaments were held in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ) , parallel to the women's tournament that of the men's. The venue was the Hotel Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro.

Robert Hübner was tied for first place with Lajos Portisch and Tigran Petrosjan in the men.

In the women's category , Gisela Fischdick took fourth place, which qualified her for participation in the candidates' tournament.

As another participant from Germany, Barbara Hund reached 14th place . Sergiu Samarian acted as trainer and second for the women .

Note : Henrique da Costa Mecking resigned from the tournament after the second round, his games were taken out of the rating. His game against Jan Smejkal from the second round was canceled and not ended.
