Playoff for 4th place
In November 1987 there was a playoff between the tied players in Havana in order to determine a possible successor to the candidate matches. Each player met each of the two opponents four times. As a result, Nikolić prevailed with 6 points ahead of Granda Zúñiga (4 points) and Nogueiras (2 points). However, the tournament was of no practical relevance, as no substitute was needed in the candidates' tournament.
