Interzonal tournament Biel 1985

The interzonal Biel in 1985 was established in July 1985 as a round robin tournament with 18 participants in Biel played. It was organized by the World Chess Federation FIDE and was intended to determine four participants in the candidates' tournament for the 1987 World Chess Championship .

Playoff for 4th place

Following the main tournament, the three players with the same number of points played a playoff at the same point to determine the fourth qualifier. Each player met each of his competitors three times. Since Short and van der Wiel again stayed tied, the better Sonneborn-Berger rating from the interzonal tournament decided in favor of the Englishman
