Petrópolis interzonal tournament 1973

The Petrópolis 1973 interzonal tournament was held from July to August 1973 as a round-robin tournament with 18 participants in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis . It was organized by the World Chess Federation FIDE and was intended to determine the participants in the candidate competitions for the 1975 World Chess Championship .

Tournament for 2nd and 3rd place

Two other participants for the candidate competitions were to be determined among the players with equal points. This tournament took place in September 1973 in Portorož . Each of the three players met their two opponents four times. Portisch secured victory with a large margin, Polugajewski also secured participation in the candidate matches with second place.
