Tournament for 6th place

Between the three equal points players Reshevsky, Hort and Stein, a playoff was set to determine the sixth qualifier, which took place in February and March 1968 in Los Angeles . Each player met each of the other two four times. After this playoff all three players were again tied. Ten of the twelve games ended in a draw. There were only decisive games between Hort and Stein: Stein won in the second, Hort in the fourth. Stein had rejected a draw bid in his losing game. At this point the last game between Hort and Reshevsky was still pending, so Stein couldn't be sure of reaching first place with a draw. After the undecided outcome of the play-off match, the Sonneborn-Berger rating of the main tournament decided on the ranking, whereby Reshevsky got the last qualification place without winning a game in the play-off.
