Interzonal tournament Palma de Mallorca 1970

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The interzonal tournament - a chess tournament - in Palma de Mallorca from November 9th, 1970 to December 12th, 1970 was used to determine the participants for the candidate competitions of 1971. In addition to ex-world champion Tigran Petrosyan, who was dethroned by Boris Spassky in 1969, and Viktor Korchnoi , who lost to Boris Spassky in the final of the 1968 candidate competitions , the six first-placed winners of the interzonal tournament should be eligible to participate in the candidate tournaments. The winner of these candidate competitions would then have the right to challenge the reigning world champion Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship .

Bobby Fischer won the tournament confidently with a lead of 3.5 points over Bent Larsen , against whom he suffered the only defeat. With the tournament victory, he made an important step towards winning the world championship in 1972. His participation was only possible through the waiver of his compatriot Pál Benkő , who was actually entitled to start , who received 2000  US dollars as compensation from the US Chess Federation .

For Robert Huebner , who was 22 at the time, qualifying for the candidate tournaments was his international breakthrough. Wolfgang Uhlmann from the GDR managed to qualify for a candidates tournament for the first and last time.
