Stockholm Interzonal 1962

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stockholm 1962 interzonal tournament was held from January to March 1962 as a round-robin tournament with 23 participants in the Swedish capital, Stockholm . It was the fifth interzonal tournament of the World Chess Federation FIDE and was supposed to determine the participants of the candidate tournament in the same year . The winners of the zone tournaments as well as eliminated participants of the last World Cup cycle took part. Bobby Fischer won with a two and a half point lead . In addition to him, the players in places 2 to 6 - Efim Geller , Tigran Petrosjan , Viktor Kortschnoi , Miroslav Filip and Pál Benkő - qualified for the candidates' tournament . The latter was only runner-up in the elimination tournament, which had become necessary due to a tie, but benefited from a FIDE regulation issued in 1959 that limited the number of Soviet players in candidate tournaments to three, which is why Leonid Stein was not allowed to participate.
