Mario Bertok (born September 2, 1929 in Zagreb , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † August 20, 2008 in Lake Jarun near Zagreb, Croatia ) was a Yugoslav, later Croatian chess player and sports journalist for the sports daily Sportske novosti .

Life

In 1957 he was awarded the title of International Master . He also represented Yugoslavia on the fourth board at the 1960 Chess Olympiad , in which Yugoslavia took third place. He was also successful at European team championships : both at the very first European team championship in 1957 in Baden, Lower Austria, and at the 1961 European team championship in chess in Oberhausen , he took second place with the Yugoslav team, with an individual silver medal in 1957 and one in 1961 received individual bronze medal. At the 1962 Stockholm Interzonal Tournament he was 18th out of 23 players. Bertok achieved his best international result in 1970 at the Rovinj-Zagreb tournament, where he came in 9th in the end. Bertok was married to the well-known Croatian actress Semka Sokolović-Bertok (1935-2008), who used to be a chess player herself. On August 20, 2008, Bertok was reported missing after swimming for a few hours in Lake Jarun near Zagreb. The body was recovered from the bottom of the lake that same day.

Bertok's last Elo rating was 2282, his highest rating of 2440 he reached in 1972. Before the introduction of the Elo numbers, he reached his highest historical rating of 2601 in October 1960.
