Playoff for second and third place
A playoff for two places in the candidate competitions was required among the tied players in places 2 to 4. It took place in Varese in October 1976 . Each participant had to play four times against each of the other two. Of the 12 games, 10 ended in a draw. Petrosjan won in the first round against Portisch and the latter won the second of the four rounds against Tal, who was therefore not represented in the further World Cup cycle.
