Interzonal tournament Szirák 1987

The interzonal tournament Szirák 1987 was held in July and August 1987 as a round-robin tournament with 18 participants in Szirák . It was organized by the World Chess Federation FIDE and was intended to identify three participants in the candidate matches for the 1990 World Chess Championship .

Playoff for 3rd place

For the third qualification place a playoff was required, which was held in Budapest in September and October 1987 . Portisch prevailed against Nunn 4-2. The Hungarian won the first two games, the other four ended in a draw.
