Playoff for 8th place

Following the tournament, there was a playoff between Reshevsky and Portisch for 8th place at the same place. This entitled to participate in the candidate competitions, as only three players from a country could qualify. This regulation led to the departure of the Soviet players Stein and Bronstein and thus to the advancement of the seventh (Ivkov) and the eighth. In the playoff, Portisch clearly prevailed with 2½: ½. He won the first and third games, the second ended in a draw.
