Josef Porath

Josef Porath ( Hebrew יוסף פורת; ) (Born June 7, 1909 in Breslau as Heinz Foerder ; † May 18, 1996 in Ramot HaShavim , Israel ) was an Israeli chess player of German origin.

Porath initially carried the name Heinz Foerder , under which he gained some fame in Germany in the 1920s. In 1928 he represented Germany at the Chess Olympiad in The Hague , and also took part in the German championships in 1929 and 1931, before emigrating to Palestine in 1934 . In 1937 and 1940 he won the Palestine championship. He took part in the Chess Olympiads in Warsaw in 1935 and in Buenos Aires in 1939 for Palestine , where he won a gold medal for his individual result on the second board (with +9 = 4 −1), still under the name Foerder , but changed it to Porath after the founding of the state of Israel . In 1953, 1957, 1959 and 1963 he won the championship of Israel . In 1952 , 1954 , 1956 , 1958 , 1960 , 1962 , 1964 , 1966 and 1968 he represented Israel at the Chess Olympiads. 1964 Porath won the zone tournament in Ulan Bator and qualified for the interzonal tournament in Amsterdam . Together with his compatriot Moshe Czerniak , he received the title of International Master from FIDE in 1952 .
