The 17th Chess Olympiad in 1966 was held from October 23 to November 20, 1966 in Havana ( Cuba ).

Overview

52 teams took part and determined the teams for the final groups A to D in seven preliminary groups. Among them were four newcomers with Hong Kong, Morocco, Panama and Nicaragua. 299 players (including 38 grandmasters and 45 international masters) took part in the competition. The only woman taking part was Chilean Berna Carrasco . The GDR team this time was the only German team; the Federal Republic of Germany boycotted the Olympics for political reasons. Those responsible at the DSB initially assumed that the western states, especially the USA, would not take part in the Olympics in Cuba. When the situation finally turned out to be completely different, they were no longer able to set up a team at short notice. The Federal Republic of Germany remained the only country that stayed away from the Olympics for political reasons.

The head of the organizing committee was Fidel Castro . Jaroslav Šajtar from Czechoslovakia acted as the main referee . The thinking time was 40 moves in 150 minutes, then one hour for 16 moves each time. The placement was determined based on the board points (BP), team points (MP), direct comparison and the special Berger system (SB). The venue was the Hotel Habana Libre .

Round tournaments were held both in the opening groups and in the final groups . The first two teams in each preliminary group qualified for final group A.

Hungary and Yugoslavia were tied after the first three ratings. The arbitral tribunal decided to give the bronze medal to Hungary based on an unweighted Berger system . With a weighted Berger system, Yugoslavia would have been third. The Olympia manual did not specify exactly how to calculate with the Berger system.
