Reinhart Joachim Simon Fuchs (born September 28, 1934 in Berlin ; † December 16, 2017 there ) was a German chess master . He was also known as a chess journalist.

Life

Reinhart Fuchs grew up in Berlin-Wilhelmshagen , where he lived until his death. He attended the college for finance in Gotha . He was a chess professional for eight years, after which he worked as a computer scientist at the Oberspree cable works in Berlin . From 1956 on he wrote the chess column in the Berliner Zeitung for over 40 years . He published from 1976 to 1991 in the magazine Schach , where he was deputy editor-in-chief in the 1970s and 1980s. He also wrote for the youth magazine drum and later for Kaissiber .

His first club was the Oberschöneweide chess club (now called TSG Oberschöneweide ). After the 1998/99 season he ended his active career in this club. In between he played for the AdW Berlin . From 1970 to 1992 he took a chess break.

In 1949 he took part in the youth championship of the east zone in Bad Klosterlausnitz , where he finished 7th. In 1950 he won the U20 Eastern Championship in Sömmerda . 1952 in Sigmaringen he was first ahead of Wolfgang Uhlmann in the all-German U20 youth championship . He won the GDR individual championship twice in 1953 in Jena and 1956 in Leipzig . In 1956, with two laps to go, he was 1.5 points behind the leading Werner Breustedt, but was still able to catch up and won the championship with eleven points from 15 games. In 1959 in Leipzig he was third behind Wolfgang Pietzsch and Werner Golz .

From 1956 to 1970 he played for the GDR national team. He took part in six Chess Olympiads ( 1956 to 1966 ), with the best result of a GDR team at chess Olympiads being achieved in 1958 in Munich with sixth place. He also played at the 1970 European team championship in Kapfenberg , in which the GDR reached third place, two student world championships (1958 and 1959) and various international matches.

In 1962 he was awarded the title of International Master . His last Elo rating in December 2017 was 2389, but he was listed as inactive because he had not played a rated game since 1999. When the Elo number was introduced by FIDE, it was 2430, which was also Fuchs' highest Elo number. His highest historical rating was 2591 in October 1968. According to this calculation, he was 68th in the world at the time.
