The 1st Chess Olympiad took place in London from July 18th to 30th, 1927 . It was organized by FIDE and consisted of a men's competition. In addition, various attractions took place to make chess known.

The game was played in Westminster Central Hall . 16 teams with a total of 70 players took part, who played against each other in a round-robin tournament . Time controls were after 1.5 hours for the first 30 moves, then 30 minutes for every 10 further moves.

Hungary won with the line-up of Maróczy , Nagy , Vajda , E. Steiner and Havasi .

The German team played in the line-up of Tarrasch , Mieses , Carls and Wagner . It was the only team to play all matches in the same board order.
