Tournament course

In the preliminary rounds, the favorites prevailed. But there was especially tension in Group 3 in the battle for second place in the final. Here England and Israel were equal according to all ratings and had parted in a draw. The Sonneborn-Berger evaluation based on team points was also identical. In the Sonneborn-Berger classification according to board points, England finally prevailed because they only narrowly lost to group winners Hungary.

The A-final took a very exciting course. The favorite Soviet Union was still in fourth place with three laps to go. They had surprisingly lost to the Netherlands at the start and later drew twice. While the Soviet Union won several clear wins, the other top teams took points from each other. Before the last lap, Hungary led the Soviet Union by half a point. In the direct encounter, the USSR won with 1.5: 0.5. As a result, the previous leader fell back to fourth place, while the Soviet Union was tied with Romania in front. She finally won the playoff between these two teams 3-1, with the decision already being made by two wins in the first leg.
