1984 Chess Olympiad pin

The 26th Chess Olympiad 1984 was a team chess tournament that was held from November 18 to December 5, 1984 in Thessaloniki ( Greece ). San Marino, Bangladesh, Mali and the Palestinian Territories were the first to compete in a Chess Olympiad.

The Soviet Union had to do without its two strongest players due to the 1984 World Chess Championship . Nevertheless, Alexander Beliavsky (8 points out of 10 games, bronze medal), Lev Polugajewski (7 out of 10), Rafael Vaganian (8.5 out of 10, gold medal), Volodymyr Tukmakow (7 out of 10), Artur Yusupov (5 out of 8) and Andreï Sokolov (5.5 out of 8) won the tournament with a lead, despite a defeat against the USA in round 9.
