Antoon Spinoy

Antoon Octavia Nikolaas Spinoy (born December 6, 1906 in Mechelen , † May 6, 1967 in Hasselt , Belgium ) was a Belgian politician .

biography

Spinoy began his political career first in local politics and, as a representative of the Belgian Socialist Party (BSP), was a member of the municipal council of his native Mechelen from 1938 until his death. At the same time he was a member of the Assembly of Deputies of the Province of Antwerp in 1944 and mayor of Mechelen from 1945 until his death .

In 1944 he was also active in national politics and was elected as a candidate for the BSP to be a member of the Chamber of Deputies , where he represented the interests of the constituency of the Mechelen arrondissement until his death .

In April 1954 appointed him prime minister Achille Van Acker for Defense in the cabinet, where he remained until the end of Van Acker's term of office in June 1958th

In the government of Prime Minister Théo Lefèvre , he was Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy from April 1961 to July 1965. In the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre Harmel , he was Deputy Prime Minister until March 1966 and, as such, was responsible for coordinating economic affairs.

After he left the cabinet, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on July 12, 1966 .
