Jonathan Mestel
Andrew Jonathan Mestel (born March 13, 1957 in Cambridge ) is an English chess player .
Life
Mestel won the 1974 Under 16 World Championship and the British Championship three times (1976, 1983 and 1988). At the traditional tournament of Hastings he took third place in 1983/84.
He became international master in 1977 and grand master of the world chess federation FIDE in 1982 . He also has the title of grandmaster in solving chess problems , in 1997 he became world champion in Pula , in 2002 he was third and in 2005 second at the world championships in this discipline.
Jonathan Mestel works as a PhD mathematician at Imperial College London, he is the son of the astronomer Leon Mestel .
Mestel has not played a rated game since July 2012, his Elo number has been 2471 since then. His highest Elo number was 2545 in July 1984, at that time he was 35th in the FIDE world rankings together with Efim Geller and Larry Christiansen .

Team chess
National team
Mestel played six times successfully for England at Chess Olympiads between 1976 and 1988 . He reached second place with the team in 1984 and 1988 , and in 1984 he also won the individual ranking on the first reserve board. Mestel also participated in the European Team Championships in 1977, 1980 and 1983 (where he achieved the best result on the fourth board) and at the World Team Championship in 1985 in part.
Club chess
In the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) Mestel played from 1994 to 1999 for the team of British Chess Magazine , from 1999 to 2012 for The ADs (2000 to 2002 under the name Beeson Gregory ), which was created by the merger of British Chess Magazine created with Index-IT . In 2001 and 2002 Mestel won the 4NCL.
