Gawain Christopher B. Jones (born December 11, 1987 in Keighley ) is an English chess master .

Life

Jones learned to play chess at the age of four and at the age of nine he beat an international champion in a tournament game . Jones won or occupied top places in several tournaments: 1st place at the Open in Porto San Giorgio 2007, 1st place at the Open in La Laguna 2007, I-III. Place at the Open 2010 in Sydney , I.-II. Place at the Commonwealth and South African Open 2011 in Johannesburg and 2nd place at the Corsica Masters 2011 in Bastia . In 2012 he became British Champion for the first time . He scored 9 points from 11 games at the state championship held in North Shields and won a playoff against Stephen Gordon with the same number of points 2-0. For the second time, Jones became British champion in Llandudno in 2017 . With 7 points from 9 games, he was level with David Howell , Luke McShane and Craig Hanley at the top, before he prevailed in the semi-finals of the play-off with 2-0 against Hanley and in the final with 1.5: 0.5 against McShane. At the Bunratty International Chess Festival he won the Masters group in 2011 and 2014, and he also won the Kilkenny International Masters in 2007 and 2011 and the Hastings Chess Tournament in 2013 .

Jones received the title of International Master in 2004, he achieved the required standards in April 2003 at the Neckar Open in Deizisau , in June / July 2004 at the K41 tournament in Copenhagen and in August 2004 at the British Championship in Scarborough . The title of Grand Master was awarded to Gawain Jones in 2007, he fulfilled the required standards in September 2006 at the championship of the EU in Liverpool , in October 2006 at the European Club Cup in Fügen and in the Four Nations Chess League 2006/07 . Jones took part in the 2013 World Chess Cup , but failed in the first round to Alexander Shimanov .

Gawain Jones is married to the New Zealand chess player Sue Maroroa .

Team chess

National team

Gawain Jones took part in the 2008 , 2010 , 2012 , 2014 , 2016 and 2018 Chess Olympiads with the English national team. At European team championships he was part of the English selection in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. He finished third with the team in 2019 and achieved the second-best individual result on the fourth board. At the 2019 World Team Championship in Astana , Jones finished second with the English team and achieved the second-best individual result on the fourth board.

Club chess

Gawain Jones was used in the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) for the first time in the 2000/01 season by Thistle White Rose , for which he also played the following season. In the 2002/03 season he played for Perceptron Youth , from 2005 to 2008 for Slough . After playing again at White Rose in the 2008/09 season , he became British team champion in 2011 with Pride and Prejudice . In the 2011/12 season he played again with White Rose , since 2012 with Guildford A&DC , with whom he won the 4NCL in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016 , 2017 , 2018 and 2019 . In the German Federal Chess League he played for SC Remagen in the 2011/12 season , and after Remagen's relegation he played for the Solingen chess company in the 2012/13 season . He has been playing for Münchener SC 1836 since the 2015/16 season . In the Dutch Meester class , Jones has been playing for the Groningen club SISSA since the 2014/15 season , in the Danish Skakligaen he played for the Charlottenlunder club Philidor in the 2015/16 season , with whom he became champion, and he won the Spanish team championship in 2017 and 2018 with Sestao Bizkaialde .
