David Wei Liang Howell (born November 14, 1990 in Eastbourne ) is an English grandmaster in chess .
Life
At 16, Howell is the youngest British chess player ever to achieve the title of Grand Master. In January 2007 Howell fulfilled the third grandmaster norm with second place at the Rilton Cup in Stockholm , replacing his compatriot Luke McShane as the youngest Briton to be awarded this title.
Howell learned to play chess at the age of five and made rapid progress, he was the British youth champion of the under 8, 9 and 10 year olds. In 2001 he was third after a tie-break at the U12 European Championship in Kallithea (Chalkidiki) and second at the U12 World Championship.
Howell caused a stir early on in blitz chess , in 1999 at the age of only eight he was able to defeat the English grandmaster John Nunn ; In 2001, when he was 11, he played a blitz chess competition against world chess champion Wladimir Kramnik . In the match over four games, he managed a draw in the fourth encounter .
In 2008 Howell won the 26th international Open in Andorra with 8 points from 9 games (+7 = 2 −0). In 2009 he won the British Championship in Torquay with 9 points from 11 games. 2008, 2009 (shared with Mark Hebden ) and 2010 he won the British Championship in rapid chess .
At the London Chess Classic 2009, a category 18 tournament , he came third behind Magnus Carlsen and Wladimir Kramnik and achieved an Elo rating of 2760.
Currently (as of March 2015) he is in second place in the English Elo ranking.
Howell studies folklore, mythology and medieval literature at Cardiff University .

Howell took part with the English team in the 2008 , 2010 , 2012 and 2014 Chess Olympiads and the 2011 , 2013 and 2015 European Team Championships .

In the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) Howell played from 2001 to 2004 for Slough , from 2004 to 2009 and again since 2019 for Guildford A&DC , from 2009 to 2011 for Pride and Prejudice , from 2011 to 2014 for Wood Green Hilsmark Kingfisher and from 2014 to 2019 for Cheddleton . He won the 4NCL in 2007 , 2008 , 2011 and 2012 . In the German Federal Chess League he played from 2010 to 2015 for SG Trier and since 2016 for SV 1930 Hockenheim , in France Howell played for Montpellier Echecs in the 2005/06 season . He won the Norwegian Elite Series in 2019 with Vålerenga Sjakklubb .
