Life

Jan Timman versus Michael Stean, zone tournament 1978 in Amsterdam

He was part of Viktor Korchnoi's second team from 1977 to 1981 and was always considered a great connoisseur of the opening . In 1975 he received the title of International Master and two years later he became International Grand Master .

He took part with the English team in the 1974 , 1976 , 1978 , 1980 and 1982 Chess Olympiads . When he first took part in the Olympics in Nice in 1974, he received a prize for the most beautiful game of the tournament in his match against Walter Browne . At the 1976 Chess Olympiad he reached third place with England and won the individual ranking on the fourth board. With the English team, he also took part in the European Team Championships in 1973, 1977 and 1980. He was most successful in 1980 when he reached third place with the team and second place in the individual ranking on the second board. Stean took part in the European Club Cup twice, in 1976 with the Cambridge University team and in 1982 with Volmac Rotterdam .

In 1976 Stean was second behind László Szabó at the international tournament in Kapfenberg . Stean was only able to celebrate a few tournament victories in individual tournaments, for example in 1979 in Vrsac, 1980 in Smederewska Palanka and 1982 in Beer-Sheba. It was almost enough to win a British championship , as he finished first in 1974 in Clacton-on-Sea . He then lost the due playoff against George Botterill.

At the age of 29, Stean retired from tournament chess in 1982. Today he is a tax advisor in London.

Stean is listed as inactive by the world chess federation FIDE because he has not played an Elo rated game since 1982 .

He published two chess books: Sicilian Najdorf (London 1976, ISBN 0-7134-0098-6 ) and Simple Chess (London 1978, ISBN 0-571-11215-3 ).
