Julian Michael Hodgson (born July 25, 1963 in Llanelwy (English: St Asaph ), North Wales ) is a British chess player and chess book author.

Life

Julian Hodgson first caught on in the 1970s when he won the British Under-21 Championship when he was just 14 years old. In 1983 and 1988 he was awarded the title of International Master and Grand Master by the World Chess Federation FIDE . Hodgson was British Champion four times (1991, 1992, 1999 and 2000). His greatest international successes at chess tournaments include his second place at the traditional "Lloyds Bank Open" in 1986, victory at the Geneva Open in 1988, winning the "Canadian Open" in 1997 and his shared victory in 1999 in New York.

He is a specialist in the Trompowsky attack (1. d2 – d4 Ng8 – f6 2. Bc1 – g5) and the Hodgson attack named after him (1. d2 – d4 d7 – d5 2. Bc1 – g5). Hodgson is known for a sharp and aggressive style of play, which earned him quick wins and the nickname "Grandmaster of Disaster".

Hodgson played his last Elo-rated games in the 2002/03 season of the German team championship, so he is listed as inactive at FIDE.

Hodgson is the author of numerous chess books, especially in the area of opening theory .

National team

Hodgson represented his country at five Chess Olympiads between 1990 and 2000 . He won the bronze medal with the team when he first participated in Novi Sad in 1990 , and a silver medal in Manila in 1992 for his individual performance as the second substitute for the English team. Hodgson took part in two European team championships and won the tournament in 1997 in Pula with the team, while in Haifa in 1989 he achieved the best individual result on the third board and the third-best rating of all participants. In the same years he also took part in the team world championships.

Club chess

In the British Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) Hodgson played from 1995 to 1998 for Slough , in the 1998/99 season at Home House and from 2000 to 2002 for Beeson Gregory . He won the 4NCL in 1996 , 2001 and 2002 . In the German federal chess league, Julian Hodgson played from 1993 to 1995 at Munich SC 1836 , in the 1995/96 and 1997/98 seasons at SK Zähringen , in the 1996/97 season at PSV Duisburg , from 1998 to 2000 at the Delmenhorster Schachklub and from 2000 until 2003 with the Lübeck chess club from 1873 , with which he became German team champion in 2001 , 2002 and 2003 . Hodgson won the Dutch Hoofd class (until 1996) or Meester class in 1996 , 1997 , 1998 and 1999 with Panfox / De Variant Breda .
