Master class 1996/97

In the Meester class 1996/97 the 74th Dutch team championship in chess was played. It was also the first season in which the league was named Meesterklasse (until the 1995/96 season this was referred to as Hoofdklasse ).

mode

The 10 participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament in the preliminary round . The last two were relegated to class 1, the first four qualified for the play-off. The play-off was carried out in the knockout system, all four places were played.

Game dates

The preliminary round competitions were held on September 21, October 19, November 23, December 14, 1996, January 11, February 15, March 8, April 5 and April 26, 1997. The play-off competitions took place on May 30th and 31st, 1997 in Breda .

Preliminary round

The defending champion Panfox / De Variant Breda , Hilversums Schaakgenootschap and last year's climber Leidsch Schaakgenootschap had already secured their places in the play-off before the last round , while SMB Nijmegen and Van Berkel / BSG were still fighting over the last play-off place. Bussum lost to Rotterdam in the last round, and so Nijmegen achieved fourth place by beating Philidor Leeuwarden . In addition to Leiden, HWP Sas van Gent had moved up from class 1 , and they stepped down again together with Leeuwarden.

Semifinals

In the semifinals, Nijmegen, fourth in the preliminary round, faced the preliminary round winner Breda in one competition and the second and third in the preliminary round met in the other with Hilversum and Leiden. Both competitions saw clear victories of the teams with better placement in the preliminary round.

Final and 3rd place match

While in the game for 3rd place Nijmegen was able to clearly retaliate for the defeat in the preliminary round with a 6½: 3½, the decision in the final was tight. With a 5½: 4½ Breda managed to defend last year's title.
