In the Meester class 1997/98 the 75th Dutch team championship in chess was played. Dutch team champion was Panfox / De Variant Breda , which won its third title in a row.

mode

The 10 participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament in the preliminary round . The last two were relegated to class 1, the first four qualified for the play-off. The play-off was carried out in the knockout system, all four places were played.

Game dates

The preliminary round competitions were held on September 20, October 18, November 15, December 13, 1997, January 10, February 14, March 7 and 28 and April 25, 1998. The play-off competitions took place on May 21 and 22, 1998 in Breda .

Preliminary round

The defending champions Panfox / De Variant Breda , Hilversums Schaakgenootschap and SV Zukertort Amstelveen had already secured their places in the play-off before the last round , while last year's promoters Schaakclub Groningen and SMB Nijmegen were still fighting for the last play-off place. With a win against Hilversum, Groningen qualified for the play-off. In addition to Groningen, the second team from Panfox / De Variant Breda was promoted from class 1. This also achieved relegation, while Rotterdam and the Leidsch Schaakgenootschap had to relegate.

Semifinals

In the semifinals, Groningen, who was third in the preliminary round, faced the preliminary round winner Breda and in the other competition with Hilversum and Amstelveen, the second and fourth of the preliminary round met. Both competitions saw clear victories of the teams with better placement in the preliminary round.

Final and 3rd place match

While Amstelveen clearly prevailed 7-3 in the match for third place, the decision in the final was tight. With a 6: 4 Breda managed to return the favor for the defeat in the preliminary round and to defend the previous year's title.
