Gert Jan Timmerman

Gert Jan Timmerman (born April 15, 1956 ) is a Dutch chess player and the 15th world chess champion .

Timmerman learned chess relatively late, in 1974, when he was 18 years old. He is multiple master of Rotterdam and since 1985 FIDE master . In the Dutch Meester class he played in the 1997/98 season both in the first team of Panfox / De Variant Breda , which became champions, and in their second team, in the 1998/99 season only in the second team and in the season 2000/01 both in the first team to become champions and in the second team. From 2002 to 2004 he played for VastNet Rotterdam , in the 2004/05 season he was again Dutch team champion with Breda. With the second team from Breda he also took part in the European Club Cup 1998. In Germany, Timmerman played for SVG Plettenberg from 2004 to 2007 (including in the 2006/07 season in the 2. Bundesliga West) and has played with SF Lilienthal in the Lower Saxony Association League since 2011 , and in Belgium he plays for Koninklijke Oostendse Schaakkring .

In 1975 he started correspondence chess, in 1981 he took part in a Dutch championship for the first time, which he was also able to win. In 1983 he was repeatedly Dutch champion in this discipline and in 1986 he achieved the title of grandmaster, which the ICCF awarded him. In 2002 he won the 15th World Correspondence Chess Championship (12 out of 15), which started in 1996.

In the ICCF ranking, Timmerman is currently (July 2007) with a correspondence chess Elo number of 2698 in 7th place. His Elo number is 2170 (as of December 2014), in July 1991 he had his highest Elo number of 2375 .
