Leonardo Ljubičić

Leonardo Ljubičić (born December 26, 1966 ) is a Croatian correspondence chess player . He is the 28th world correspondence chess champion (2013–2016).

Life

His father Ante was a math professor and a big fan of chess. He also got his passion for chess from him. His father taught him the game around the age of nine. Shortly afterwards he went to the local chess club, which his father looked after, and played close-up chess there first. Around the same time, his father explained the rules of correspondence chess to him and asked him to give it a try. The reasons he gave was that correspondence chess would improve his chess game in general and that he could also learn to organize himself and be more patient.

Ljubičić later studied engineering , but has worked in various different areas in his professional life so far. He is married and has three grown children.

Close chess

In close chess, Ljubičić sporadically takes part in competitions of the Croatian team championships. It had its highest rating of 2230 in July 1994 and January 1995.

Correspondence chess

Leonardo Ljubičić received the title of International Master (IM) in 2001 after finishing sixth in the semifinals of the 22nd World Correspondence Chess Championship. He was awarded the title of Honored International Master (SIM) in 2007 and the title of Grand Master in 2011.

Internationally, Ljubičić has so far participated in six correspondence chess world championships, three correspondence chess European championships and two Olympiads.

Nationally he was second in the 5th Croatian Cup (2006) and second again in the 6th Croatian Cup (2011), this time behind his father. He finished the 11th Croatian Championship in 2007 as third.
