Correspondence chess

He reached the qualification for the finals of the 17th World Cup by a third place in the semifinals in 1989/95 and a fourth place in the 3/4 final. The final round began in March 2002. Bern took a year and a half sabbatical for this tournament and, according to its own statements, analyzed day and night. In 16 games he made no more than five imprecise moves. In January 2006 he was the winner with 10.5 out of 16 points. Although he was level on points with the Germans Wolfgang Rohde and Joachim Neumann, but because of the better rating he became world champion. He was the youngest ever holder of this title. Strangely enough, he was never the "reigning world champion" because at the time of his tournament victory the 18th World Championship won by Joop van Oosterom had already ended for almost a year because, unlike the 17th World Championship, it was held by email and the trains were therefore faster were transmitted.
