Jørn Østergaard Sloth (born September 5, 1944 in Sjørring , Thisted Kommune ) is a Danish chess player and the 8th world chess champion .

Sloth, who is a professor of mathematics and Russian at the Gymnasium Ringkøbing , has not only achieved success in correspondence but also achieved a number of excellent close-up chess results.

Close chess

In 1962 he was Danish youth champion in close chess. In 1964 he took a shared first place at the European Junior Championships in Groningen. In the same year he won the Aarhus championship and in 1967 he became the master of Copenhagen. In 1965 he achieved a score of 10.5 out of 12 at the Student Olympics; in total he represented Denmark four times in this competition. In 1972 he was a member (3rd board) of the Danish national team at the Chess Olympiad in Skopje . In 1975 he became Danish vice-champion. He holds the FIDE Master's title. Sloth plays club chess at Nordre SK , with whom he became Danish team champion in 1964 and took part twice in the European Club Cup .

Correspondence chess

In correspondence chess, which he has been practicing since 1959, he was even more successful: in 1963/65 he finished the Baltic team tournament without defeat with 5 out of 8 points. In 1973 he won the European 8, 1978, awarded him ICCF to correspondence chess grandmaster title . He won the 8th World Correspondence Chess Championship from 1975 to 1980 and became the youngest world chess champion to date. In 1992 he finished 3rd in the Axelsson memorial tournament, in which only grandmasters participated.

His correspondence chess rating is currently 2568 (as of December 2005).

Sloth is married and has three children.
