Wilhelm von Scherff
Wilhelm Karl Friedrich Gustav Johann von Scherff (born February 6, 1834 in Frankfurt am Main , † April 16, 1911 in Venice ) was a Prussian infantry general and military writer.
Life
origin
Wilhelm was the son of Friedrich von Scherff († 1869) and his wife Karoline, born von Arnoldi (1794–1868). His father was a Dutch state councilor and envoy to the Bundestag in Frankfurt am Main.
Military career
Scherff attended high schools in his hometown and Wiesbaden. Effective October 16, 1849, he was a cadet in Berlin and then on April 27, 1852 as second lieutenant of the 2nd Guards Regiment walk the Prussian Army transferred. Between October 1856 and June 1859 Scherff was commanded for further training at the General War School and was adjutant of the Prussian occupation brigade from 1860 to 1866 . Scherff experienced the German War in 1866 as a general staff officer in the detachment under Major General von Beyer . In this position he took part in the battles near Hammelburg , Werbach , Helmstadt and the bombardment of Würzburg during the Main Campaign .
After the war he was transferred to the General Staff of the 19th Division in July 1869 and promoted to major in October 1869 . As such, he took part in the war against France in the battles at Mars-la-Tour , Gravelotte , Beaune-la-Rolande and Orléans and the siege of Metz in 1870/71 . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Scherff worked from October 1, 1873 to January 11, 1875 as a teacher of tactics at the War Academy. Subsequently, he was employed as a lieutenant colonel and department head in the great general staff.
Scherff was then a member of the border regulation commission in Bulgaria until 1879 , after his return he was commander of infantry regiment No. 29 , and in 1882 chief of the general staff of the XI. Army Corps , received the rank of Brigade Commander on February 13, 1883, and was finally promoted to Major General on December 6, 1883 . As such, Scherff was then from September 4, 1884 to June 11, 1888 commander of the 41st Infantry Brigade and was then appointed commander of the 33rd division in Strasbourg while being promoted to lieutenant general . He held this post for almost a year and became commander of the 18th division on June 17, 1889 .
Although by his superiors to the Commanding General recommended Scherff retired and was awarded the character as General of Infantry on 14 February 1891 board for disposition made.
Scherff died in Venice in 1911 on a trip to Italy.

Scherff married Elsa Ernestine Johanna von Holleben (* 1862) in Metz on December 19, 1882 . The marriage remained childless.
