Tõnu Õim

Tõnu Õim (born June 16, 1941 in Raasiku ) is an Estonian chess master and both the 9th and the 14th world chess champion .

Life

Õim studied sports in Moscow with a degree in 1975 and worked as the head coach in the chess section of the Tallinn Sports Committee.

Õim successfully played near chess before his correspondence chess career. In 1959 he was Estonia's youth champion. In 1967 he finished 2nd in the men's championship of Estonia. In the same year he participated in the 35th USSR - Championship part and beat u. a. Ex-world champions Mikhail Tal and Lev Polugajewski .

Correspondence chess

Since 1963 he has devoted himself to correspondence chess, when he was used in international matches for Estonia. He later took part in the 7th Chess Olympiad and in the European team championship. In 1975 he became international champion, in 1981 he received the title of correspondence chess grandmaster, at the 9th World Correspondence Chess Championship (held from 1977 to 1982) he was world champion (13 out of 16 points), at the 12th World Championship he was 6th the Axelson memorial tournament. He also won the 14th World Championship, held from 1994 to 1999, making it the first player to win the world championship title in correspondence chess twice.
