Ivan Sokolov (born June 13, 1968 in Jajce , Yugoslavia ) is a Dutch chess player from Bosnia .

Life

Ivan Sokolov learned chess from his father, who himself was a master player. In 1987 he won in Portorož , Stockholm (together with Michail Gurewitsch ) and Belgrade . In the same year FIDE awarded him the title of Grand Master . In 1988 he became the Yugoslav champion.

His most important victories in international tournaments include his successes: Biel 1988, Maribor 1990, Copenhagen 1991, Nikšić 1991, Starý Smokovec 1991, Portorož 1993, Akureyri 1994, Ter Apel 1995, Malmö 1995, Antwerp 1995, Leeuwarden 1997, Dresden ( zone tournament ) 1998, Hastings 1998/99, Amsterdam 1999, Vlissingen 2000, Amsterdam 2000, Reykjavík 2001, Selfoss 2002 and 2003, Sarajevo 2003, Hoogeveen 2004, Sarajevo 2005. In 1999 Sokolov achieved a spectacular victory in 28 moves over world champions at the Corus chess tournament Garry Kasparov .

During the civil war in Yugoslavia, Sokolov went into exile with Predrag Nikolić in 1993 in the Netherlands, where he became national champion in 1995 and 1998 . He is married to a Dutch woman. In 2003 he was named Player of the Year in the Netherlands. From April 2009 he was again registered for the Bosnian Chess Federation. In 2010 he organized the Bosna Open in Sarajevo and ran for the office of Vice President of the European Chess Union . In December 2010 he moved back to the Dutch Chess Federation.

At the 2017 Hoogeveen chess tournament, he played a six-game match against Jorden van Foreest . Sokolov won 3½: 2½.

Team chess

National team

Sokolov took part in twelve Chess Olympiads . He made his debut in 1988 in Thessaloniki for the Yugoslav team, which he also represented in 1990 in Novi Sad . From 1992 to 2000 and 2010 he played for the team of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with whom he reached second place in Moscow in 1994 . At the Chess Olympiads from 2002 to 2006 and 2012 he took part with the Dutch team. Sokolov took part in ten European team championships , namely 1989 with Yugoslavia, 1992, 1997 and 1999 with Bosnia and Herzegovina and 2005, 2007, 2011 , 2013, 2015 and 2017 with the Netherlands. In the team competition he won in Gothenburg in 2005 and came second in 1989 in Haifa , in the individual competition he was the best player on the second board in Warsaw in 2013 . In the team's World Cup he was in 2013 for the Dutch team.

Club chess

He played in the German Federal Chess League from 1997 to 2006 for SG Porz and became German team champion with them in 1998 , 1999 , 2000 and 2004 . In the 2013/14 season he was registered with SV 1930 Hockenheim , but was not used. In the Dutch Meester class (until 1996: Hoofdklasse ) he played for De Variant Breda from 1995 to 2006 , for Share Dimension Groningen from 2006 to 2010 , for Charlois Europoort in the 2016/17 season and for Bussums Schaakgenootschap in the 2017/18 season . He was Dutch team champion in 1996 , 1997 , 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2005 , 2006 and 2007 . In the Austrian State League A he was in the seasons 1993/94 and 1994/95 with SC Margareten Austrian team champion. In the Swedish Elitserien , Sokolov played from 2000 to 2004 for Limhamns SK . In the French team championship , Sokolov played in the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons at Clichy-Echecs-92 , in the 2005/06 season at CEMC Monaco , in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons at AJE Noyon and since the season 2012/13 at L'Echiquier Chalonnais . Sokolov won the British Four Nations Chess League in 2005 and 2006 with Wood Green , and in the 2016/17 season he played for Cheddleton . In Belgium, Sokolov became champion with KSK 47 Eynatten in 2004 , in 2009 with Schachfreunde Wirtzfeld , with whom he played until 2011, and since 2011 he has played for Koninklijke Gentse Schaakkring Ruy Lopez . With this he also took part in the European Club Cup 2018, with the second-best individual result on board 2.

In the Spanish team championship , Sokolov played from 2003 to 2005 for CA Intel-Tiendas UPI Mancha Real , with which he became champion in 2004 , and in 2014 for Gros XT . In the Premijer Liga Bosnia and Herzegovina Sokolov played for Bosna Sarajevo and was team champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009. Sokolov represented Bosna Sarajevo at 14 European Club Cup events and won the competition with it in 1994, 1999, 2000 and 2002.
