Starý Smokovec (German Altschmecks , Hungarian Ótátrafüred ) is a district of Vysoké Tatry ( Slovakia ) and is 1010  m nm on the southern slope of the Slavkovský štit (Schlagendorfer peak) in the High Tatras . Since 1999, Starý Smokovec has been the administrative center of Vysoké Tatry.

history

The place was founded in 1793. Starý Smokovec developed at the source of the "Altschmeckser Sauerwasser", which has been known since ancient times. From the first half of the 19th century, larger hotels were built. There were spa facilities because of the spring.

In 1904 the Grand Hotel was built by the Budapest architect Guido Hoepfner . The hotel, which originally consisted of one block, has been expanded three times.

Since 1908 the Tatra Electric Railway has connected Starý Smokovec with Poprad and Štrbské Pleso , which was built as a replacement for the trackless railway Poprád – Ótátrafüred , which was only operated from 1904 to 1906 . In 1912 a branch line to Tatranská Lomnica was built . As a result, Starý Smokovec developed into the most important tourist destination in the south of the High Tatras. At the time, Altschmecks was in competition with the other newly established settlements in the High Tatras.

tourism

Starý Smokovec is the oldest tourist recreation center in the High Tatras. Many marked hiking trails and mountain trails start in Starý Smokovec. A modern funicular railway leads to the 1,280 m high Hrebienok (little comb) .
