The Gleislose Bahn Poprád – Ótátrafüred was a trolleybus company , called Gleislose Bahn in German-speaking countries at the time , in what was then Upper Hungary .

The 13.8 kilometer route connected the town of Poprád ( German village , today: Poprad ) with the spa town of Ótátrafüred ( Altschmecks , today: Starý Smokovec ) in the High Tatras, which is over 300 meters higher .
history
The facility was opened on August 2, 1904, it was the first trolleybus operation in Hungary and at the same time the first in what is now Slovakia . The trackless railway was built and operated according to the rare Stoll system by the German entrepreneur Carl Stoll from Dresden . Three cars with road numbers 1, 2 and 3 were available for operation. A special feature of the Stoll vehicles was the structure based on the principle of a semi -trailer truck : They had a two-axle drive unit on which a single-axle trailer was placed.
In total, there were only four systems according to this system, in addition to the route discussed here, these were the Dresden Haide Railway , the also Hungarian Gleislose Bahn Hermannstadt (it was opened just two days after operation in the High Tatras) and the Gleislose Bahn Niederschöneweide – Johannisthal near Berlin .
Due to technical difficulties and an economic bottleneck for the Carl Stoll company, the trolleybus route in the High Tatras had to be closed again in August 1906 (as the last of the four companies under the Stoll system). In 1908, the Tatra Electric Railway finally took over the operation of the line between Poprád and Ótátrafüred.
