The Gleislose Bahn Hermannstadt is a former trolleybus operation - in the German-speaking world at that time still called Gleislose Bahn - in Hermannstadt ( Hungarian Nagyszeben ) in Transylvania in what was then Austria-Hungary , today Sibiu in Romania .

The 2.3 kilometer long route connected the train station with the Erlenpark , Parcul sub Arini in Romanian . The trackless railway crossed the historic old town of Sibiu - the so-called Upper Town - and ended in Schewisgasse , today's Bulevardul Victoriei . The terminus was at the park entrance, that is, at today's Bazinul Olimpia swimming pool .

The railway was built and operated according to the rare Stoll system by the German entrepreneur Carl Stoll from Dresden . A special feature of the Stoll vehicles was their structure based on the principle of a semi- trailer . The four vehicles used on the route covered here also had a two-axle drive unit on which a single-axle trailer was placed.

In total there were only four systems according to this system, in addition to the line discussed here, these were the Dresden Haide Railway , the also Hungarian trackless line Poprád – Ótátrafüred in the High Tatras - it was opened just two days before operation in Sibiu - and the trackless line Railway from Niederschöneweide to Johannisthal near Berlin .

The Sibiu plant was opened on August 4th, 1904 and had to be closed again on October 18th of the same year due to technical difficulties. A car fire caused by a short circuit was decisive. But before that there were vehicle problems, and with the onset of autumn there were problems on the slippery roads, especially on the inclines. Among other things, this led to two serious accidents. It was the first trolleybus operation in Transylvania, the second in the Kingdom of Hungary and the first in what is now Romania.

The Gleislose Bahn was ultimately replaced by the Sibiu tram , which opened on September 8, 1905 and which also connected the station with the Erlenpark on the same route. Independently of this, today's Tursib transport company in Sibiu also operated a modern trolleybus from August 17, 1983 to November 14, 2009.
