Lodewijk Prins (born January 27, 1913 in Amsterdam , † November 11, 1999 ) was a Dutch chess player and chess journalist.

Chess player

Prins represented the Netherlands at all twelve Chess Olympiads between 1937 and 1968 and achieved the second-best individual result on the fourth board in 1939 and on the third board in 1950 . He also played with the Dutch team at the 1936 Chess Olympics in Munich , at the qualifying tournaments for the European Team Championships in 1957, 1965 and 1970 and at the Clare Benedict Cup in 1955 (which the Dutch team won), 1962, 1963 and 1967. In 1965 he won after a playoff against Coen Zuidema the championship of the Netherlands . Other significant successes were first place in Birmingham in 1937 (together with Eliskases ), his victory in 1948 at the Hoogovens tournament in Beverwijk and his first place in 1951 in Madrid.

In 1950 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master , and in 1982 he became Honorary Grand Master . His best historical rating before the Elo was introduced was 2604 in December 1951.

In the Grünfeld-Indian Defense the variant 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Nf3 Bg7 5. Qb3 dxc4 6. Qxc4 0–0 7. e4 Sa6 is named after him.

A line also bears his name in the Sicilian Defense . The move sequence 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. f3 is called the Prins variant.

Prins was responsible for the chess column in various newspapers.
