Johannes Theodorus Hermanus van der Wiel (* 9. August 1959 in Leiden ) is a Dutch Chess - Grandmaster .

He received the title of International Master in 1979 and the Grand Master title in 1982.

He took part in the Dutch championship 26 times in a row , making him the record holder.

Services

In the 1990s, van der Wiel was known for his good results against chess computers . In 2001, however, he surprisingly lost a competition against the Rebel program with 2.5: 3.5.

National team

With the Dutch national team, van der Wiel took part in the 1980 , 1982 , 1984 , 1988 , 1990 , 1992 , 1994 , 1996 and 1998 Chess Olympiads . The greatest success was the third place with the team at the 1988 Chess Olympiad. He also represented the Netherlands at the European team championships in 1983, 1992, 1997, 1999 and 2003 and the 1989 world championship . At the 1983 European team, he achieved the third best result on the third board , the second best result on the second board at the European team in 1992.

In the Dutch Meester class ( Hoofd class until 1996 ), van der Wiel played for Volmac Rotterdam in the 1970s, 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s , with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup six times and reached the final in 1979, finishing third in 1988 and in 1984 made it to the semi-finals, from 1995 to 2005 for De Variant Breda , with whom he was Dutch team champion in 1996 , 1997 , 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 and 2005 and won the European Club Cup in 1998, and from 2005 to 2007 for the Leidsch Schaakgenootschap . In the German Bundesliga he played from 1996 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2005 for SG Porz , with which he became German team champion in 1998 , 1999 , 2000 and 2004 ; later he played in Germany on the top board of SF Überruhr Essen. In the Austrian Bundesliga , van der Wiel played for SC Traun in the 1994/95 and 1996/97 seasons and for SV Raika Gamlitz from 2000 to 2002 . In the European Club Cup 1986 he reached the semi-finals with Anderlecht .
