mode
The strongest national teams in the world as well as representatives of the individual continents take part in the team chess championship. The field is limited to 10 teams, with a round-robin tournament ("everyone against everyone") being played. With the exception of the first edition in 1985 (six players), the team strength is four players. The use of a substitute player is permitted.
The first team world championship took place in 1985. Initially, it was played every four years, and since 2011 it has been every two years. Since 2007 there has also been a women's team championship, which is held every two years. Since then, the team points have been the decisive evaluation criterion, previously it was the board points.
