Hoofdklasse (chess) 1995/96

In the Hoofdklasse 1995/96 the 73rd Dutch team championship in chess was played. It was also the last season in which the league was named Hoofdklasse (from the 1996/97 season this was referred to as the Meesterklasse ) and the first of a total of eleven seasons in which the champions were determined by a play-off.

mode

The 10 participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament in the preliminary round . The last two were relegated to class 1, the first four qualified for the play-off. The play-off was carried out in the knockout system, all four places were played.

Game dates

The competitions of the preliminary round were held on September 23, October 21, November 18, December 16, 1995, January 6, February 3, March 2 and 30 and April 20, 1996. The play-offs took place on May 16 and 17, 1996 in Breda .

Preliminary round

Even before the last round, Panfox / De Variant Breda and Van Berkel / BSG had secured their places in the play-off, while the defending champions Cap Volmac Rotterdam , Hilversums Schaakgenootschap and SMB Nijmegen fought for the last two play-off places. Rotterdam secured their place by beating Hilversum, but Hilversum also made it into the play-off, as Nijmegen did not come out with a draw. From class 1, Philidor Leeuwarden and Utrecht managed to get promoted again. Both promoted players achieved relegation, while HWP Zaanstad and the second team from Cap Volmac Rotterdam had to relegate.

Semifinals

In the semifinals, Hilversum, who was fourth in the preliminary round, faced the preliminary round winner Breda in one competition and the second and third in the preliminary round met in the other with Bussum and Rotterdam. Both competitions saw close decisions, Breda won just like in the preliminary round with 5½: 4½, while the competition between Bussum and Rotterdam ended 5: 5 and Rotterdam moved into the final because of the better Berlin ranking.

Final and 3rd place match

While in the game for 3rd place Hilversum could clearly return the favor with a 7½: 2½ for the defeat in the preliminary round, the decision in the final was tight. With a 5½: 4½ Breda managed to dethrone the defending champion from Rotterdam.
