Paul van der Sterren (born March 17, 1956 in Venlo ) is a Dutch chess player .

Life

Van der Sterren began his international career in 1974 when he took part in the European Youth Championship in Groningen . In 1979 he was second in the B tournament in Wijk aan Zee and in the same year international champion , in 1980 he was 1st – 2nd. in London . In 1985 he won the Dutch championship , in 1988 he won the bronze medal with the Netherlands at the Chess Olympiad in Thessaloniki . 1989, the year in which he FIDE the Grandmaster title bestowed he won in Ostend and Munich (together with his compatriot Jeroen Piket ), 1991, he finished second in Altensteig (behind Alexander Chernin ) and won in 1992 in Nettetal (together with Markus Stangl ).

The year 1993 was the most successful of his career: first he achieved a second title win in the Dutch championship, then he qualified via the zone tournament in Brussels together with his compatriot Loek van Wely for the interzonal tournament in Biel , in which he unexpectedly came second after Boris Gelfand was able to qualify for the Candidates Tournament. In the following year, however, he was eliminated in the first round of the FIDE candidate competitions in Wijk aan Zee against the American Gata Kamsky with 2.5: 4.5. In the same year van der Sterren won in Antwerp ahead of Viktor Kortschnoi .

In later years van der Sterren did not achieve any further noteworthy success. In 1997 he took part in the FIDE KO World Championship in Groningen, but was eliminated in the first round against Michał Krasenkow . In 2011 he published an autobiography under the title Zwart op Wit, Verslag van een schakersleven ( ISBN 978-90-5691-376-2 ). Van der Sterren's Elo number is 2475 (as of December 2014), his highest Elo number of 2605 he reached in January 1994.

National team

Van der Sterren competed with the Dutch national team in the 1982 , 1984 , 1988 , 1990 , 1992 , 1994 , 1996 and 2000 Chess Olympiads , with the greatest success being third place with the team in 1988. He also represented the Netherlands at the 1989 World Team Championship and the 1983 European Team Championship.

In the Dutch Meester class ( Hoofd class until 1996 ) van der Sterren played until 2003 for the Hilversums Schaakgenootschap , with which he took part in the European Club Cup in 1993 . In the 2010/11 season he played for Caissa Amsterdam . In the German 1st Bundesliga, van der Sterren played for SV Castrop-Rauxel from 1994 to 2001 .
