Wijk aan Zee is a Dutch town in the municipality of Beverwijk in the province of North Holland , about 20 km from Amsterdam . Wijk aan Zee has 2,150 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

tourism

Because of its coastal location on the North Sea , the place is developed for tourism. The cycle path to Egmond aan Zee (approx. 20 km) is popular. Wijk aan Zee attracts numerous surfers on weekends , increasingly also from Germany .

Events

Wijk aan Zee achieved international importance through the annual Tata Steel chess tournament , which is now financed by the steel company Tata Steel . Earlier names of the tournament were Corus chess tournament or Hoogovens chess tournament , which were financed by the steel company Corus (previously Hoogovens ). The most famous game of chess was Kasparov - Topalov in 1999.

In 1999 Wijk aan Zee was named the Cultural Village of Europe in collaboration with 11 other locations from 11 countries . At the same time, artists from these nations exhibited their sculptures on the beach in collaboration with the steel factory. Queen Beatrix visited this steel sea on June 16th.
