Beverwijk ( listen ^{? / I} ) is a municipality in the north-west of the Netherlands in the province of North Holland . The municipal area covers an area of ​​20.09 km², of which 1.78 km² is water. 41,138 people live in Beverwijk (as of January 31, 2019). Today the place is a shopping center mainly for furniture.

Wijk aan Zee is also part of the municipality of Beverwijk .

history

In 1276 Beverwijk received market rights and in 1298 city rights from the Counts of Holland. In the 17th century, wealthy Amsterdam merchants settled here and built houses in the dunes.

Because of the murder of three collaborators by the Dutch resistance in 1944, the German occupation authorities arrested 486 young men from Beverwijk and Velsen- Noord in order to force the perpetrators to surrender. These hostages were taken to Germany for forced labor, where 63 of them were killed.
